Why Namibia and Marble Stone Art?

Namibian marble is a hard, metamorphic limestone rock, which ranges from pure white to a variety of grey shades with veined patterns. Our marble is especially beautiful because the crystals within are fractionally larger than the Carrara marble, giving it a mystic transparency and a glimmering effect when placed in direct LED or sunlight, enlivening the artworks, making them very special indeed.

Although there are extensive marble deposits in Mediterranean countries and elsewhere, in sub-Saharan Africa there are relatively few. The largest sub-Saharan marble deposits are located near a small town called Karibib in Namibia, and that is where we source our raw material from.

Since classical times, marble has been used for sculpture and adornment throughout the world. However, in sub-Saharan Africa the use of stone as an art medium is practically unknown. A very small number of historic stone artworks can still be found in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana, Benin, Cameroon, Gabon, DRC, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe, all of which are simple surface carvings in granite, limestone, sandstone and steatite (soapstone). But overall it is quite evident that marble stone artworks do not feature. African art is generally perceived to be abstract wooden, bronze and clay masks and spiritually inspired artefacts. It is our aim to change that perception from now onwards.

As marble is exceptionally difficult to work with and requires specialised tools and skills, it has not been a particularly favourite material for African artists to express themselves in. It was only in 1958 that Zimbabwe began sculpting in stone again. Since then, the world market has been flooded with black and different coloured sand- and soapstone sculptures, creating the general impression that Zimbabwe is the only sub-Saharan African country that produces stone artwork.

Now, at WHUDA MARBLE ART, we are the first in the entire sub-Saharan Africa to make use of the distinctive characteristics of our marble, to steer a very new identity and tradition for Namibia and the African continent as a whole, by creating sophisticated unique Africa inspired artworks.
